Chris Lee & The Island Close By Steel Band
Steel drum solos, umbrella drinks and island breezes...

Think Jimmy Buffet, Bob Marley, Santana and calypso classics.... Chris Lee hammers out the stylish sounds of summer with his hand-crafted, 55-gallon oil drum.

With custom computerized midi backing tracks, Chris is literally an amazing one-man band, sure to please both the young and young-at-heart with his versions of calypso, reggae and island favorites. Chris received his Bachelor's degree in music at the University of Maryland; he earned his Master's degree in music and Ph.D. in percussion performance at the University of South Carolina. He began playing steel drums in 1990 as a graduate student at USC, and his love for the instrument has taken him to learn and perform in Trinidad and Tobago, the "birthplace" of steel drum music.

Chris is a percussionist with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra and co-founder of Borenya West African Drum and Dance. He has performed with the Savannah, Augusta, Charlotte, Charleston, Greenville, Hilton Head and Atlanta symphonies as well as with Roger Williams, Roger Pemberton, Dick Goodwin, Bert Ligon, The Moody Blues, Ray Charles, Shirley Jones, and the Garfield Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. Chris conducts summer workshops, clinics/master classes and school residencies throughout the Southeastern United States.
