Heralded as "The Best Big Band in the Carolinas," this fantastic ensemble is comprised of an all-star cast of musicians and vocalists from Myrtle Beach and Charleston, S.C., to Chapel Hill and Wilmington, N.C., and has been a featured act for the internationally acclaimed Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C.
The band's music ranges from the Big Band era to the new standards of today. From Glenn Miller to Harry Connick Jr., from Disney to Broadway tunes, the Andrew Thielen Big Band has something in its repertoire for every audience.
The leader of this band is Andrew Thielen, an accomplished drummer who has played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Ramon Keenan, a UNC trumpet instructor with a high and beautiful range like Maynard Ferguson, is another featured instrumentalist. Jackie Beaumont, whose torch songs entertained Grandstrand audiences for 14 years, is a featured vocalist; vocalist Pippa Slover recreates authentic vocals from the Big Band era as well as pop vocals such as Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross; Larry Tannelli also has showcased his talents in the Myrtle Beach area recreating the hits of Bobby Darrin, Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams and Tex Beneke.
Rounding out the ensemble are Artie Thompkins on saxophone, Dan Hersey on lead trumpet, Bill Gregory on jazz trumpet, Steve Drew on lead trombone, Dr. Dick Conrad on clarinet and alto, Tony Marra on piano, and John Firth on principle bari-saxophone.
